Chasing a huge target of 201 runs set by England, the Indian team was bundled out for just 76 runs, losing the match by a massive margin of 125 runs. After this disappointing performance, captain Shreyas Iyer spoke openly about the team's mistakes in the post-match presentation.
Iyer Explained Where the Mistake Happened
After the match, captain Shreyas Iyer analyzed the reasons for the defeat. He said, "This is a great opportunity to come back strongly. There is no need to think too much about what has happened so far."
Iyer admitted that the team's performance was very poor. He said, "There is no doubt that we played very bad cricket, but we have also learned a lot from it."
Players Will Have to Take Responsibility
The captain advised every member of the team to reflect on their role. He said, "Players need to start thinking about how they can be effective for the team or how they can build momentum for the team."
Shreyas emphasized, "So every player has to think for himself and see how they can win the match and how they can take that kind of responsibility."
'It Wasn't a 200-Run Wicket'
Shreyas gave his opinion while assessing the pitch. He said, "I think it was a very poor performance. To be honest, I can't use a better word for it. Losing by such a big margin is definitely not acceptable."
Iyer pointed to the turning point in the match from where India's grip loosened. He stated clearly, "The way we batted, we lost 5 wickets in the powerplay. I think that set the momentum, and I think we lost it right there. So, we need to plan again."
The captain also admitted the failure to execute plans on the field. He said, "You can make a lot of plans in the team meeting, but when you come on the field, you have to adapt to the conditions as quickly as possible."
Iyer also pointed out shortcomings in the bowling. He said, "On today's pitch, the hard length was proving to be very helpful for the bowlers. I think we didn't execute that properly."
Talking about the batting strategy, he said, "When you are chasing 200 runs, you have to increase the pace of your innings. You should have a set way of how you will take the innings forward. So, we were a bit behind in that aspect. So definitely, our performance was very poor."
