NDA Nears Two-Thirds Majority Amid Opposition Cracks

New Delhi | In Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third term, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is continuously strengthening its position at the center. Recent political developments have brought the NDA closer to the two-thirds majority required to make significant changes to the Constitution.

NDA's Growing Strength in Lok Sabha

A major split in the opposition camp has boosted the NDA's strength in the Lok Sabha. 20 MPs from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have rebelled and merged with the NCPI. These MPs have announced their support for the NDA in the house, further increasing the ruling party's numbers.

Speculation of Split in Shiv Sena UBT

Meanwhile, there is speculation of a major split in Uddhav Thackeray's party, Shiv Sena (UBT). According to sources, 6 MPs from the party may soon join the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. If this happens, the NDA's position in the Lok Sabha will become even stronger.

The Majority Math in Rajya Sabha

Compared to the Lok Sabha, the NDA's path in the Rajya Sabha appears easier. Currently, the NDA has 148 members in the upper house. This number is expected to rise to 151 after the ongoing elections, which is a comfortable position for a majority.

Experts believe that if this trend of splits in opposition parties continues, it will become easier for the government to pass even controversial amendments.

A Few Steps Away from Two-Thirds Majority

According to reports, the NDA could win the by-elections for the three seats vacated by the resignations of TMC MPs. This would increase the alliance's strength to 154. This would be just nine seats short of the 163 needed for a two-thirds majority in the 245-member house. There is also talk of a potential split in the Samajwadi Party, which could favor the NDA.

Why is a Two-Thirds Majority Important?

While ordinary bills are passed by a simple majority in the house, bills related to constitutional amendments require the support of a majority of the total members of both houses, as well as at least a two-thirds majority of the members present and voting.

These political shifts clearly indicate that the NDA is rapidly moving towards enhancing its legislative power. If the alliance achieves a two-thirds majority, it will enable the government to implement its agenda more forcefully, potentially leading to major changes in Indian politics.
