According to data available on the Shala Darpan portal as of August 1, 2026, nearly every third post in the department is lying vacant.
As per the portal, there are a total of 4,13,951 sanctioned posts in the Education Department. Against these posts, only 2,92,558 employees are currently working.
This directly means that a total of 1,21,640 posts are vacant in the department, raising serious questions about the state's education system.
The most critical situation regarding vacancies is seen in the senior teacher cadre. A total of 1,10,447 posts are sanctioned for this cadre, but only 58,570 positions are filled.
Thus, 51,877 posts for senior teachers are vacant, directly impacting teaching activities.
Many other important posts in the department are also vacant in large numbers. These include 15,227 posts for Lecturers (School Education), 24,384 for Class IV employees, and 6,355 for Junior Assistants.
Additionally, 3,704 posts for Basic Computer Instructors, 1,328 for Vice Principals, and 2,753 for Principals are also vacant.
In secondary education, 1,391 posts for Teacher Level-1, 1,061 for Level-2, 1,703 for Physical Education Teachers, and 1,435 for Lab Assistants are vacant.
The administrative system is not untouched by this shortage. Posts for Senior Assistant (1,698), Assistant Administrative Officer (978), and Administrative Officer (79) are vacant. Even high-ranking positions like Joint Director, Deputy Director, and District Education Officer are empty.
However, an interesting figure has also emerged. In the Pre-Primary Education Teacher cadre, 1,912 employees are working against 1,665 sanctioned posts, meaning there is a surplus of 247 employees.
