Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has supported the selectors' decision.
Mumbai | A major change has been announced in the Indian cricket team. Star batsman Shreyas Iyer has been appointed the new captain of the T20I team, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. This decision comes just before the upcoming series against Ireland.
'I Will Not Change Myself'
Upon taking on the new responsibility of captaincy, Shreyas Iyer has made his intentions clear. In a statement, he said that he will not make any changes to his captaincy style and will maintain his true identity.
Iyer said, "I don't need to change my personality. I will remain as I was before. I will not try to be like someone else or live in anyone's shadow."
He mentioned the competitive cricket of Mumbai, stating that it was there he learned to face challenges.
His first test as captain will be the two-match T20I series against Ireland, which will test his leadership skills.
Ganguly Also Supported the Decision
Meanwhile, former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has also supported the selectors' decision.
Ganguly said, "Shreyas has performed brilliantly and he deserved it. Removing Suryakumar Yadav is not wrong; the selectors have made this decision thoughtfully."
This statement further strengthens the selection committee's faith in Iyer's abilities.
The team announced for the Ireland and England tours is a mix of several young and experienced players.
The squad is as follows: Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Tilak Varma, Ravi Bishnoi, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mohammed Siraj, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Shivam Dube, Varun Chakravarthy, Prince Yadav, and Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
This series will be a new beginning for the team under a new captain, and all eyes will be on Iyer's performance.
