Washington | Hopes for a historic peace deal between the United States and Iran are growing, but in the midst of this, tensions have once again peaked. The US military has fired missiles at a military base in Southern Iran, raising questions about the peace process.
According to Iranian media, negotiations between the two countries are in the final phase, and the US has also sent a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Iran for the agreement. Despite this positive atmosphere, the military action has increased concerns.
Late on Wednesday night, the US military fired several missiles targeting a military base in Southern Iran. The attack was carried out near the Strait of Hormuz at a location that the US considers a threat to its military and commercial vessels.
This is the second US attack this week. Earlier on Monday, the US had also conducted airstrikes on Iran's missile launch sites and boats.
Why Was This Attack Carried Out?
A US military official explained the reason for this attack. According to him, Iran had first launched four drones at some commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The official stated, "The US military successfully shot down the Iranian drones and retaliated against the Iranian military base in response."
This attack was carried out to stop Iranian activity that was posing a threat to international maritime traffic.
Will It Affect the Peace Deal?
Despite the ongoing attacks, the ceasefire between the two countries is still in effect. Experts believe this is not the first time the ceasefire has been violated, but it has never escalated into a full-blown war.
Therefore, it is hoped that these attacks will not have a major impact on the peace agreement. US President Donald Trump has also made it clear that Iran has no other option but to accept this deal.
However, these incidents make it clear that the path to peace is still fragile. Efforts to apply military pressure continue from both sides, but the ultimate goal seems to be finding a permanent solution.
