West Bengal Budget: 20% DA Hike, 1 Lakh Jobs Announced
Kolkata | The Subhendu Sarkar government in West Bengal presented its first budget on Monday. Presented by Finance Minister Dr. Swapan Dasgupta, this budget features several major announcements for government employees and the youth, including a significant 20% hike in Dearness Allowance (DA).

Major Announcements for Employees and Youth

The biggest highlight of the budget was for government employees, who will now receive a 20 percent increased DA. This decision comes as a major relief for lakhs of employees.

Alongside this, the government has also placed a special focus on job creation in the state. The budget promises to provide one lakh new government jobs.

A provision for 33 percent reservation for women has been made in these jobs, marking a significant step towards women's empowerment.

Boost to Health and Education

The government has also announced measures to strengthen the health infrastructure. MBBS seats will be increased by 650 across 13 medical colleges in the state.

This move will help address the shortage of doctors and improve medical education in the state.

Furthermore, an important announcement has been made for the welfare of retired journalists. They will now be given a monthly pension of ₹5,000.

Focus on Infrastructure and Other Sectors

The state's transport sector has also found a place in the budget. A hike in the remuneration for bus conductors of the State Transport Corporation has been announced.

Recognizing the growing air traffic in Kolkata, the government has emphasized the need for a new airport.

The Finance Minister stated, "There is a lot of passenger congestion at Kolkata Airport, and a second airport is needed in Kolkata to boost the region's economy."

Under this plan, the government will identify 1,000 to 1,500 acres of land near Kolkata to build a new greenfield airport.

Incentives for Energy and Commerce

Renewable energy has also been promoted in the budget. An allocation of ₹100 crore has been announced for rooftop solar systems.

Additionally, SC/ST families will be given an extra subsidy of ₹5,000 on electricity consumption, providing relief to the weaker sections.

To facilitate business, the government has proposed allowing shops and restaurants to remain open 24/7. The legal regulations for this will be examined.

Overall, the first budget of the Subhendu Sarkar government focuses on appeasing employees, providing employment to the youth, and strengthening the state's infrastructure, aiming to accelerate West Bengal's overall development.
