Jaipur | A five-story building was demolished in the historic walled city area of the capital, Jaipur, on Thursday morning. Located in the densely populated area of Ramganj, this building had been a cause for concern for the past three months. The Municipal Corporation carried out this challenging operation amidst police security.
Why had the building become dangerous?
According to information, the wall between two shops on the ground floor of this building was removed to merge them into one.
Locals allege that due to this structural change, a main pillar of the building weakened and got damaged.
The surrounding market was also affected by this incident, and the road had to be closed for several days for safety reasons.
Decision to demolish after technical investigation
The Municipal Corporation had a technical team conduct an investigation to assess the building's strength.
The investigation report made it clear that repairing the building was not feasible and it could not be kept safe.
Based on this report, the corporation administration made the final decision to demolish it.
This operation was extremely challenging as the area is very narrow, where it is difficult for even two cars to pass simultaneously.
A local resident said, "We were living in the shadow of fear for the last three months. Every moment we felt the building might collapse. We have finally breathed a sigh of relief."
During the operation, more than 10 surrounding houses were also evacuated for safety.
Fortunately, most of the building's debris fell on a nearby old tree, averting a major accident. However, a building opposite also suffered minor damage.
Serious questions raised on old constructions
After this incident, serious questions have been raised about the safety of old and illegally constructed buildings in the walled city area.
Local citizens have demanded that the administration conduct regular inspections of all such dangerous buildings.
People say that by taking timely action, any major future accidents can be averted.
Now, the Municipal Corporation team is engaged in clearing the debris from the site, which is expected to take a few days.
