Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked PM Modi's 'cultural shock' remark, calling it a narrow and patriarchal mindset. He questioned why boys are given freedom while girls face restrictions.
Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over a recent statement. Rahul Gandhi alleged that the thinking of a particular section in the country regarding women remains extremely narrow and patriarchal even today.
He made these remarks while interacting with students at an event named 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' (Voice of Students). During this, he prominently raised the issue of the protest held at Jantar Mantar.
Rahul Gandhi said that both boys and girls were part of the protest at Jantar Mantar, but the Prime Minister's attention was only drawn to the words used by the girls.
During the event, Rahul Gandhi also played a video clip of PM Modi. In this video, the Prime Minister had termed the language used by the protesting girls at Jantar Mantar as a 'cultural shock'.
Taking a jibe at this, Rahul Gandhi said, "If boys use abusive words, nobody in society has a problem; it is considered normal."
He further added, "But when our daughters say the same thing, it is called a 'cultural shock'. What kind of double standard is this?"
Rahul questioned why boys are given all sorts of freedom on one hand, while on the other, there are attempts to keep girls confined in a cage.
Attack on Old and Patriarchal Thinking
Rahul Gandhi compared Prime Minister Modi's comment to the thinking of 'Manusmriti'. He said that this is the same old mentality that always wants to see women under someone's control.
He said, "It is written in Manusmriti that a woman should first be under the control of her father, then her husband, and finally her son."
Rejecting this thought, Rahul said that in today's modern India, girls have their own independent existence.
He emphasized, "Being someone's daughter, wife, or mother cannot be the sole identity of a woman. Girls have their own separate identity, and their life should depend entirely on their own decisions."
Appeal to the Women and Daughters of the Country
The Leader of the Opposition appealed to the youth of the country, especially women, to come forward to uproot this patriarchal and narrow thinking.
He said, "The daughters of the country are India's greatest asset, and they do not need to live under any pressure or follow anyone's mindset."
