'Sargara' Becomes 'Sargada', Community Warns of Protest
Jaipur |

In Rajasthan, the Sargara community has expressed serious concern and anger over a clerical error in their caste name. The community alleges that in government documents, their caste name 'Sargara' is being incorrectly written as 'Sargada', which they feel is tampering with their identity.

Regarding this issue, the community has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, demanding an immediate correction.

What is the entire issue?

According to the Sargara community, in the central government's original order, the 'Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950', and in Rajasthan's list of Scheduled Castes, their name is recorded in English as 'Sargara' at serial number 55.

Even the 2011 census records use the same spelling. The community states that the name in the list notified by the Parliament has always been 'Sargara', so where did 'Sargada' come from?

Technical Glitch or Negligence?

The memorandum states that this change was not made by the state government through any law, but is the result of a mistake in Hindi translation and typing on the online portal.

The Department of Information and Technology, Jaipur, has written the Sargara caste, listed at serial number 55 in the Scheduled Castes list, as 'Sargada' in Hindi.

For this reason, the same incorrect name is being printed on caste certificates issued from e-Mitra kiosks, causing significant inconvenience to the community members.

Possible Reasons Behind the Error

The community has pointed out some main reasons for this mistake:

  • Transliteration Error: While transliterating from English to Hindi, typists often change 'Ra' to 'Da' when writing 'Sargara' because the characters 'र' and 'ड़' are close to each other in computer fonts.
  • Copy-Paste System: Once 'Sargada' was fed into the master data of the Department of Information and Technology (DoIT), the same incorrect name started appearing on all e-Mitra and Jan Aadhar portals across Rajasthan.

The community says this is not a governmental error but a result of administrative and technical lapse and negligence, the demand for which is now gaining momentum.

Struggle Ongoing Since 2023

The Sargara community has been consistently raising its voice to correct this clerical error since 2023.

In this regard, the issue has been raised from the District Collector, MLA, MP, and Tehsil offices to the Legislative Assembly, but no solution has been found to date, leading to considerable resentment in the community.

Community Warns of Protest

In the memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the community has issued a clear warning. They have stated that they are only demanding their respectful name so that no individual has to face a sense of inferiority.

The memorandum states that if 'Sargara' is not entered in place of 'Sargada' in government data by August 17, 2026, the Sargara community will hold a massive protest across the state.

Along with this, they have also warned of a siege of the Legislative Assembly in Jaipur. The community has urged the Chief Minister to pay prompt attention to this matter and issue orders for the amendment.
