The recent series of maternal deaths in various government hospitals in Rajasthan has increased the concerns of the state government and the medical department. Regarding this serious issue, Medical and Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khinvsar chaired a high-level review meeting at Swasthya Bhawan in Jaipur on Monday.

Top gynecologist experts from the state participated in this meeting, where the seriousness of the situation was discussed.

Main Causes of Deaths

During the meeting, the Health Minister stated that untimely deaths of pregnant women occurred in districts like Kota, Bikaner, Bhilwara, and Banswara.

He attributed this to serious causes such as anemia (lack of blood), high blood pressure, PPH (postpartum hemorrhage), and severe malnutrition.

The minister clarified that all these women were referred from small hospitals in remote rural areas to large government medical colleges in critical condition. Despite the best efforts of the doctors, they could not be saved.

25 Percent Reduction in Maternal Mortality Rate

Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khinvsar also presented official data from the past few years in the meeting. He mentioned that the maternal mortality rate in Rajasthan is continuously declining.

Data Analysis

According to government data, a total of 1094 maternal deaths were recorded in the state in the year 2023-24.

This number decreased to 986 in the year 2024-25.

As per the current data for the year 2025-26, this number has further reduced to 824.

Thus, during the tenure of the current government, a significant and positive reduction of about 25 percent has been recorded in maternal death cases in the state.

Reference to Past Incidents

The Medical Minister also referred to some major medical incidents of the past. He mentioned that in 2011, 18 pregnant women died within just 3 days at Umaid Hospital in Jodhpur.

Similarly, in 2011-12, 8 pregnant women died one after another in Jaipur.

The minister said that there is no common pattern or cause for the recent incidents in Kota, Bikaner, or Bhilwara. All these pregnant women were already in the 'high-risk' category. Some had severe anemia, while others developed serious conditions like liver and kidney failure due to high blood pressure.
