Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has reacted strongly to Team India's defeat in England and Ireland. He said removing coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer is easy, but the real problem is IPL-based selection.
Following the Indian cricket team's disappointing performance in Ireland and England, former cricketers are continuously criticizing the team management. India faced a 0-2 clean sweep in Ireland and then a 0-4 clean sweep in England.
In this context, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has strongly criticized the Indian team's approach after the T20 series loss against England.
Manjrekar expressed his opinion by posting a video on Instagram. He said that the easiest thing to do would be to remove head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer or some other players from the team.
He emphasized, "But this will not solve the real problem."
What is the Real Reason for the Defeat?
According to Manjrekar, the right step for the team would be to identify the main reason for the defeat.
He said, "The main reason is that these T20 matches were played in the foreign conditions of Ireland and England. Our batsmen and our team were not properly prepared for these conditions."
Targeting the selectors, Manjrekar said that all these players were selected based on their IPL performance.
He criticized the batting-friendly conditions in the IPL, stating that it makes it difficult to correctly judge a player's ability in tough situations.
He said, "The batting conditions in the IPL are the easiest. That's why it's easy to be deceived. This is why you see so many batsmen in the top order doing the strange things they do."
'No Guarantee of Success on Foreign Pitches'
The former cricketer clarified that a good performance in the IPL does not always guarantee success abroad.
He stated, "You don't really know which player will do well when there is something in the pitch for the bowlers. It's not as easy as batting on a marble sheet like in the IPL."
Manjrekar advised the selectors to pick players like Shubman Gill, who can succeed in all kinds of conditions. He concluded by saying that the focus should be on those responsible for creating excessively batting-friendly conditions in the IPL.
