The ICC has announced a new format for the T20 World Cup from 2028, replacing the Super-8 with a Super-10 stage and eliminator matches, making the road to the semi-finals tougher.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is continuously working towards making the Cricket World Cup even more interesting. In this sequence, the board has approved a major change in the format of the men's T20 World Cup.
The ICC has made a significant announcement to introduce a new Super 10 stage and eliminator matches from the 2028 edition. This change will take the excitement of the tournament to a new level.
In the recently concluded 2026 T20 World Cup, India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, created history by winning the title. Team India became the first country to defend the title.
Surya and company first won the group stage and then qualified from the Super 8 group. After that, they registered a spectacular victory by defeating England in the semi-finals and New Zealand in the final.
The ICC has clarified that the number of teams in the tournament will remain at 20. However, due to the major changes made in the format, the journey to the semi-finals is going to be more challenging and exciting than ever before.
Super-10 in Place of Super-8
One of the biggest and most important changes is the complete removal of the Super-8 stage. In its place, the ICC has decided to start a larger and more comprehensive Super-10 round.
Along with the Super-10, eliminator matches will also be added to the tournament. These eliminator matches will actually function like quarter-finals, which will further increase the excitement of the knockout stage. These changes will make the path to the semi-finals even more difficult for the teams.
