In Revdar, Shankaracharya Sadanand Saraswati stated in a sermon that a boat is not the destination; the ultimate goal is divine attainment. He explained the mystery of the world, means, and end.
In this sequence, Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Sadanand Saraswati Ji Maharaj delivered his discourse in the Mandukyopanishad lecture series. He elaborated on the 25th Karika of the third chapter of the Mandukya Karika, composed by Shri Gaudapadacharya.
During the sermon, Maharajshri explained the concepts of karma, knowledge, the principle of non-duality, and the distinction between means and end through simple examples.
He quoted the mantra from the Ishavasyopanishad, “avidyayā mṛtyuṁ tīrtvā vidyayā'mṛtamaśnute.” Through this, he clarified the sequential relationship between action (karma) and knowledge (gyan).
The Shankaracharya explained that the scriptures do not instruct to perform action and acquire knowledge simultaneously; rather, both have their own sequence and importance.
Quoting the verse from the Bhagavad Gita, “Yadgatvā na nivartante taddhāma paramaṁ mama,” the Shankaracharya stated that the attainment of the divine is the ultimate goal of human life.
Explaining the method of adhyaropa-apavada (superimposition and negation), he described that the Shruti first describes the various elements of the world. Then, by negating their ultimate independent existence, it leads the seeker towards the sole divine reality.
Giving a beautiful example, Maharajshri said that to cross a river, a boat is the means and the other shore is the end.
He explained, “If a person considers the boat itself as the destination, he will never be able to reach the other bank.”
Similarly, this world is merely a means on the journey to self-realization; it is not the final end. By considering the world as the ultimate truth, the supreme human pursuit of self-realization cannot be achieved.
