The price hike is due to tensions in global energy supply.
New Delhi | The common man has been hit by another major blow of inflation. Oil marketing companies have increased the prices of domestic cooking gas (LPG) cylinders by Rs 29. The new rates have come into effect across the country from June 7, affecting the budget of millions of families.
Why did LPG cylinder prices increase?
According to media reports, the main reason for this price hike is the ongoing tension in the Middle East. This tension has negatively impacted the global energy supply chain.
This has led to an increase in the cost of crude oil and gas, the burden of which is now being passed on to consumers. This is the second major hike in the last three months.
Earlier in March, the price of domestic cooking gas was also increased by Rs 60 per cylinder. That hike was also due to a surge in energy prices in the international market.
How much is the burden on oil companies?
Sources say that this price increase will only partially compensate for the heavy losses being incurred by the oil companies. The cost pressure on the companies remains constant.
It is being reported that before the latest revision, public sector oil marketing companies were suffering a loss of about Rs 703 on every domestic LPG cylinder.
What are the new prices in major cities?
After this hike, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder in the capital Delhi has increased from Rs 913 to Rs 942.
In the financial capital Mumbai, the price of a cylinder has gone up from Rs 912.50 to Rs 941.50. Meanwhile, its price in Kolkata is now Rs 968.
Consumers in Chennai will now have to pay Rs 957.50 for a cylinder, which was earlier Rs 928.50.
Talking about other cities, the new rate has become Rs 947.50 in Bhopal, Rs 945.50 in Jaipur, and Rs 1040 in Patna. It will be available for Rs 1013 in Raipur.
What is the impact on commercial cylinders?
However, this time there has been no change in the prices of 19 kg commercial LPG gas cylinders. This has brought some relief to hotel and restaurant owners.
Earlier on June 1, the prices of commercial cylinders were increased by Rs 42. The prices of commercial cylinders have been continuously increasing for the past few months.
This increase in domestic gas prices will have a direct impact on the monthly budget of the common people. This will not only increase household kitchen expenses but also affect the cost of small eateries and tiffin services, which could further fuel inflation.
