The Indian cricket team may have faced defeat in the second ODI match played in Cardiff, but for star batsman Virat Kohli, this match became memorable. He claimed several major records during his brilliant half-century innings, leaving behind many cricket legends.
Kohli's Brilliant Half-Century Innings
In the second match of the three-match ODI series held at Sophia Gardens, Virat Kohli displayed excellent batting. He played a crucial innings of 65 runs off 66 balls.
During his innings, Kohli also hit 8 magnificent fours. However, he could not convert his innings into a century and was caught by Adil Rashid off Jofra Archer's bowling.
With this innings, Virat Kohli has become the Indian batsman with the most half-centuries against SENA countries, i.e., South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia.
This was his 30th half-century against SENA countries. In this regard, he surpassed Rahul Dravid, famously known as 'The Wall', who had 29 half-centuries. Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar is in third place on this list with 25 half-centuries.
Surpassed Sachin Tendulkar as Well
Setting another major milestone, Kohli also claimed the record for the most scores of 50 or more in international cricket against England.
This was the 33rd time he had scored 50+ against England. He surpassed Sachin Tendulkar (32) in this matter. Rahul Dravid (26), MS Dhoni (24), and Sunil Gavaskar (23) are at third, fourth, and fifth places respectively on this list.
Completed 8000 Runs on Foreign Soil
During this innings, Virat Kohli also completed 8,000 runs in ODI cricket on foreign soil. He is the third Indian batsman to achieve this feat.
Before him, only Sachin Tendulkar (11,450) and Sourav Ganguly (8,111) had accomplished this.
Became World's Number One
Furthermore, Virat Kohli also became the batsman with the most ODI runs at an opponent's home ground. He broke the record of Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara.
Kohli now has 5,538 runs at opponents' homes, while Sangakkara had scored 5,518 runs. This list also includes Ricky Ponting (5,090) and Sachin Tendulkar (5,065).
Showcased Prowess in England Too
Kohli has also become the second-highest run-scorer among foreign batsmen in England. Before the match, he needed 40 runs to surpass Ricky Ponting and Kane Williamson. He has now scored 1,415 runs in the ODI format in England and is only behind Rohit Sharma in this regard.
