Selectors' Big Decision
According to reports, Rohit will not be selected for the ODI team after the Lord's ODI. This news could be shocking for Indian cricket fans.
A source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has provided important information on this matter. According to the source, the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar has decided not to include the veteran batsman in the 50-over format.
The selectors' goal is now to build a team for the future. They want to give more opportunities to young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal in preparation for the 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Selectors Give a Clear Message
The BCCI source further clarified the reason behind this decision.
The selectors have decided that they will not select Rohit Sharma for the ODI team anymore. If he wants to retire respectfully or does not want to retire immediately, it is entirely his personal decision. However, the message is clear that the selectors will not pick him for the ODI team after the match at Lord's on Sunday.
Why Was This Decision Taken?
This tough decision has been taken due to growing concerns about Rohit Sharma's recent form. The BCCI official added, "The discussion is that Rohit has not been playing in his best form for some time."
He also mentioned, "Meanwhile, a player like Yashasvi Jaiswal has to sit out despite performing well in ODIs. This gap has forced the selectors to rethink their strategy."
The official concluded, "For now, it seems almost certain that the Sunday match at Lord's could be Rohit's last match as a player for the Indian cricket team."
Already Said Goodbye to Test and T20
It is important to know that Rohit has already retired from two other formats of cricket. He retired from T20 Internationals shortly after leading India to victory in the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup.
After that, during IPL 2025, Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli, also bid farewell to Test cricket. He was playing the 50-over format because he wanted to represent the country in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Rohit's Illustrious ODI Career
Before the five-match tour of England on May 7, 2025, Rohit had quit Test cricket, and Shubman Gill was soon made the ODI captain.
In his career, Rohit has scored 11,757 runs in 287 ODI matches. He is considered one of the most aggressive and reliable openers in the 50-over format.
Rohit captained India in 56 ODI matches. Thanks to his aggressive mindset and excellent captaincy, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Later, under his captaincy, India also won the 2025 Champions Trophy, which was played in the UAE.
