Rajasthan Rajya Sabha: BJP, Congress Tie at 5-5 After Polls
JAIPUR | Even after the election for three Rajya Sabha seats from Rajasthan, the balance of power between the BJP and Congress in the upper house remains intact. Both parties now have five members each from the state quota. This situation was the same before the election and continues after the new polling.

In the recent elections, the terms of BJP's Rajendra Gehlot and Ravneet Singh Bittu, and Congress's Neeraj Dangi were ending.

For these seats, the BJP has sent Dr. Satish Poonia and Dr. Alka Gurjar to the Rajya Sabha. Meanwhile, Congress has reposed its faith in its current MP Neeraj Dangi, getting him re-elected.

The Issue of Local vs. Outsider

A major difference between the members of BJP and Congress is their local connection. It is a feature of the BJP that all five of its Rajya Sabha members are natives of Rajasthan.

On the other hand, out of the five Congress members, only Neeraj Dangi is from Rajasthan. Other Congress members include Sonia Gandhi (New Delhi), Mukul Balkrishna Wasnik (Maharashtra), Randeep Singh Surjewala (Haryana), and Pramod Tiwari (Uttar Pradesh).

What Did the Leaders Say?

Newly elected Rajya Sabha MP Satish Poonia targeted Congress, saying,

"Congress has become irrelevant from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. There is infighting within the party in Rajasthan. Ashok Gehlot has failed to manage the party."

Meanwhile, Congress's Neeraj Dangi stated that the party will fight the 2028 assembly elections unitedly and form the government in Rajasthan. He said,

"Political fragmentation is detrimental to democracy."

Equation to Change in 2028

The real game of Rajasthan's representation in the Rajya Sabha will be seen on July 4, 2028, when 4 seats will become vacant simultaneously.

These will include the expiring terms of three Congress members: Pramod Tiwari, Mukul Wasnik, and Randeep Surjewala. From the BJP, Ghanshyam Tiwari's term will be completed.

Based on the numerical strength in the then-assembly, a victory for the BJP on 2 seats and Congress on one seat is considered almost certain, while a tough contest could be seen for one seat. In such a scenario, the BJP has a strong probability of gaining more seats.

Overall, while the current election may not have changed the numbers, it has laid the foundation for a major reshuffle in 2028. The assembly figures at that time will ultimately determine the direction of Rajasthan's representation in the Rajya Sabha.
