Left Merchant Navy to Serve the Nation
Captain Vikram Batra was born on September 9, 1974, in Ghuggar village of Palampur, Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. His father G.L. Batra was a school principal and mother Jai Kamal Batra was a teacher.
Vikram completed his schooling in Palampur. He then moved to Chandigarh for higher studies, where he joined the NCC Air Wing during college.
During his college days, Vikram was selected for the prestigious Merchant Navy. However, his passion to serve the nation led him to reject this lucrative career.
To prepare for the CDS exam, he enrolled in MA English. In 1996, he joined the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun.
In December 1997, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. He was soon promoted to Captain due to his strong leadership and valour.
In 1999, when Pakistan deceitfully occupied the high peaks of Kargil, Captain Batra's battalion was deployed there. He successfully conquered difficult peaks like Hump and Rocky Knob.
Thereafter, Captain Batra was given the responsibility of liberating the most critical Peak 5140 from Pakistani forces. This mission was extremely difficult and challenging.
On June 20, 1999, at 3:30 AM, Vikram Batra conquered the peak and hoisted the tricolor. Upon victory, he delivered his historic message over the radio.
"Yeh Dil Maange More!"
This slogan became a symbol of bravery and courage across the nation. It created a new wave of patriotism and boosted the morale of the soldiers.
Following the success at Peak 5140, the army launched a mission to capture Point 4875, now known as 'Batra Top'. Captain Batra led this operation as well.
The team began the climb on July 7. The steep slopes on both sides and heavy enemy blockades made this mission extremely deadly.
In fierce hand-to-hand combat, Captain Batra killed eight enemy soldiers. Despite being severely injured, he threw grenades at enemy bunkers.
While protecting his fellow soldiers, Captain Vikram Batra was martyred on July 7, 1999. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration.
