For the first time in history, a 24-hour internet shutdown has been enforced in Jaipur for an anti-encroachment drive.
The JDA is conducting a campaign to demolish 134 illegal structures in Jagatpura and Malviya Nagar.
This action is part of a pending project to widen Nandpuri Road to 80 feet.
The decision to suspend the internet was made to prevent the spread of rumors and communal tension on social media.
JAIPUR | An unprecedented step was taken in Rajasthan's capital, Jaipur, on Monday. Internet services were suspended for 24 hours in a large part of the city to maintain law and order during a major anti-encroachment drive by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA). This is the first time in history that such a net ban has been imposed for an anti-encroachment action.
Why Was the Internet Shutdown Decision Made?
This entire matter is related to the Jagatpura and Malviya Nagar areas, where the JDA is carrying out a major operation.
A project to widen Nandpuri Road in Jagatpura to 80 feet had been pending for a long time.
Approximately 134 permanent illegal constructions and old encroachments fell within the boundaries of this road, which needed to be removed to facilitate smooth traffic flow.
Fears of Communal Tension
The administration had received intelligence that some anti-social elements might try to disrupt the peace during this large-scale demolition drive.
It was feared that these elements could spread misleading videos, old photos, or provocative messages on social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and X.
On the written recommendation of the Jaipur Police Commissioner, Divisional Commissioner Sarvan Kumar stated, "Maintaining public peace and order is our top priority. This is a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of any kind of rumor."
In today's digital age, even a misleading video of a small incident can go viral quickly and disturb the city's peace.
The administration took this strict decision to address this religious sensitivity and prevent any untoward incident.
Administration's Preparedness and The Way Forward
The order for the internet shutdown was issued by the Divisional Commissioner based on the recommendation of the Jaipur Police Commissioner.
This step shows how vigilant the administration has become regarding threats spreading through digital platforms.
The main objective of this action is to complete the development work without any hindrance and to maintain communal harmony in the city. This incident may set a precedent for future civic actions, where both the use and restriction of technology become crucial for maintaining law and order.
